Big Savage Tunnel Closed for Construction!
Many of you who have sneaked through in the past will find the tunnel completely impassable. There is machinery, crews of workers and debris that make it (1) illegal and (2) extremely dangerous. On-road detours are available on this website or bear with us until around June of 2003 when we can open the tunnel to trail use.
From late August through December the construction company will be busy drilling and rock bolting the Savage tunnel. They are operating the drill 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to try and make it home by Christmas. By Sept 28 they had drilled and bolted 1104 holes out of approximately 7000+ that need to be bolted. Once that operation is complete they will be spraying concrete on the tunnel side of the lining and filling the voids between the outer liner and the existing rock.

The above pictures were taken on a special tour arranged for trail supporters and tunnel sponsors When the equipment is operating (24 hours per day/ 7days per week) it is dangerous to be there.
